About NSH

Student presents their Gratitude Day craft

New School High educates high school students using the Michigan Merit Curriculum implemented by qualified, dedicated teachers. The student to teacher ratio is 10:1.

Students’ schedules may include Michigan Virtual courses, dual enrollment and independent study. Guidance counseling and special education services support students’ learning and advancement. The School’s graduates attend colleges, vocational training programs and pursue full-time employment after graduation.

EMU Charter School

The Eastern Michigan University Charter Schools Office oversees 12 public school academies located in the Michigan counties of Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, Genesee and Saginaw. These schools offer a variety of innovative approaches to educating students.

Eastern’s Charter Schools Office provides the academies with the guidance and technical support needed to maintain the high standards to which each school aspires.

With the support of Eastern’s College of Education, the Michigan Department of Education, and the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA), among others, the Charter Schools Office is leading the way toward enhancing public education in Michigan. View the EMU-NSH Charter Agreement.

About Our Founder

New School High Founder

Cynthia Burnstein, Founder of New School High

Cyndi taught English at Salem High School where she served as a leader in innovative education for 40 years. At Plymouth Canton Educational Park, she designed the Humanities course and co-founded the award-winning Spectra program, an interdisciplinary school-within-a-school that dramatically reduced failure rates in the 9th and 10th-grade core classes.

Mrs. Burnstein brings considerable knowledge and experience in leading organizational change at the high school level. She authored the $1.2 million US Dept. of Education Smaller Learning Communities grant and served as its coordinator, building capacity for teacher collaboration.

She earned her M.A. in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University and has published numerous articles on project-based learning, in addition to presenting at local, state, and national conferences.

Cyndi is the recipient of the PCEA Sharon Belobradich Leadership Award, MEA Showcasing Success Award, Wayne County RESA Golden Apple, NCTE Center of Excellence Award, and three Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Mary Beth Carroll Extra Miler awards.
